In general, pop-up windows are used <strong>for intrusive advertising<\/strong>, <strong>although they are also used as a means of attraction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of the use of pop ups are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Subscribe to a <em>newsletter<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Display legal notices such as the cookie notice.<\/li>\n<li>Access to private user areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26284 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ventana-emergente-o-popups.png\" alt=\"Example of popup window\" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_are_interstitial_ads\">What are interstitial ads?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Interstitial is the advertising format<\/strong> <strong>that appears on a website<\/strong> before viewing its content, <strong>occupying the entire screen<\/strong> for a few seconds or until the user proceeds to close it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26285 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/anuncio-interstitial.png\" alt=\"Example of interstitial advertisement\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both pop-ups and interstitial ads are often considered annoying by most users, since while browsing a website, they feel that they are being bombarded by pop-ups that seem to be trying to scare them by popping up when they least expect it. In <strong>addition to being annoying, they prevent the correct display of the information<\/strong> that the user is looking for on the website. This problem is aggravated on mobile devices mainly because of the screen size.<\/p>\n\n<p>The biggest problem with pop-up windows is that the person who decides to include them in his website does not make <strong>the appropriate configuration so that they do not cause an intrusive or massive effect on the user <\/strong>, but is usually governed by advertising and business principles.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Why_is_Google_going_to_implement_this_penalty_in_its_algorithms\">Why is Google going to implement this penalty in its algorithms?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The mobile device is currently the most widely used for Internet browsing<\/strong> and is an increasingly consolidated trend. Therefore, for some years now, one of <strong>Google&#8217;s objectives has been to improve the user experience on these devices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It began by implementing measures to improve the user experience on mobile devices with <strong>penalizing those websites that were not adapted to mobile devices. <\/strong>An attempt was made to achieve this through the tags &#8220;<em>mobile-friendly<\/em>&#8221; that <strong>websites were fully usable on mobile devices without the need for zooming or side-scrolling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even today, there are still many websites that are not optimized for mobile devices and even worse, <strong>new sites are still being developed without such optimization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you still have doubts about whether your site is optimized for mobile devices, you can check it <a title=\"Check if a website is adapted to mobile devices.\" href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/mobile-friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with Google&#8217;s validator tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/web-adaptada-dispositivos-moviles.png\" alt=\"Example of a website adapted to mobile devices\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To continue with its goal of improving the experience on mobile devices, Google has announced that as of January 10, 2017, it <strong>will begin to penalize all those websites that use &#8220;<em>pop-ups<\/em>&#8221; or interstitial ads in mobile version<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that just because only the mobile version is affected, it is not a <strong>major penalty<\/strong> and therefore should not be ignored, since, as I mentioned earlier, Internet connections via mobile devices exceed those made by computer and this is a growing trend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google&#8217;s goal is to make it easy for users to locate the information they need as quickly as possible and with the best quality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"So_how_does_this_penalty_really_affect_my_website\">So how does this penalty really affect my website?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Google has detected that a large percentage of websites in their mobile version abuse intrusive pop-ups<\/b>. This generates a <b>bad user experience<\/b> that hinders the visualization of the content they are really looking for. This is why he has declared that he will take action in this regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Why_do_you_focus_only_on_mobile_devices\">Why do you focus only on mobile devices?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Because the screens of such devices are much smaller than a computer<\/strong>, so the pop-up window occupies a higher percentage of display and is therefore more annoying than on desktops or tablets.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Do_you_penalize_all_types_of_pop-up_windows\">Do you penalize all types of pop-up windows?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The answer is no. <strong>It is important to note that Google will not penalize all types of pop-up windows<\/strong>, but only those that do not meet the characteristics they propose, focusing mainly on the fact that, as mentioned above, they should not be too intrusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It doesn&#8217;t matter whether the pop-up window is executed once we land on the page, before even viewing its content or after scrolling and browsing through it. O to<\/span>ven if it has a nice and visible &#8220;x&#8221; to close.
