But <strong>why is it so important to define the alternative text of an image?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If we have the images disabled in the browser, or there has been a problem loading them due to an error or slow connection, this alternative text is what is displayed and allows us to know more about its content.<\/li>\n<li>Another function of the alternative texts of the images is to <strong>facilitate accessibility to the web for the visually impaired<\/strong>, who will be able to listen to the description as an audio.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In SEO<\/strong>, the reason we are interested in using this attribute is because search engines do not &#8220;see&#8221; images; they can only read text to rank content. When we write relevant and descriptive Alt text, we provide search engines with alternative information that will help them <strong>identify images and use them as another element to calculate the <a title=\"Read more about the concept of Relevance in Human Level's Online Marketing Dictionary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/en\/digital-marketing-dictionary\/content-relevance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relevance of a website<\/a><\/strong>. It is even possible to enrich the Alt attribute with a keyword that interests us when writing it, in order to improve our position in the search results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<h2>How can I see if an image has the Alt attribute defined?<\/h2>\n<p>There are two simple ways to do this:<\/p>\n<p>The first one, using the <a title=\"View the Web Developer extension in the Chrome Web Store\" href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/web-developer\/bfbameneiokkgbdmiekhjnmfkcnldhhm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Web Developer extension<\/a> in the toolbar of our browser. In the drop-down menu select the &#8220;<strong>Images<\/strong>&#8221; tab and then &#8220;<strong>Display Alt Attributes<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-21734 size-full aligncenter\" title=\"The Alt attribute in the Web Developer extension\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt1.png\" alt=\"Images\" width=\"804\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt1.png 804w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt1-400x121.png 400w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt1-754x229.png 754w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt1-768x233.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The field will then appear in red in all the images as <em>alt=&#8221;Image description&#8221;<\/em> and we will be able to see immediately which ones have the Alt attribute written:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-21738 aligncenter\" title=\"Web Developer helps us to see if an image has the alt attribute defined.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt2.png\" alt=\"The alt attribute as it is displayed with the Web Developer extension\" width=\"781\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt2.png 911w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt2-400x227.png 400w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt2-754x429.png 754w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt2-900x512.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second way we can check it is by right-clicking on the image in question and selecting the <strong>&#8220;Inspect element<\/strong>&#8221; option.<\/p>\n<p>The portion of the HTML code where the image is located will be displayed in a part of the browser window:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-21741 aligncenter\" title=\"The alt attribute in the HTML code\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt3.png\" alt= code of the alternative text of an image\" width=\"607\" height=\"84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt3.png 665w, https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/alt3-400x55.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the alt=&#8221;&#8230;&#8221; field is empty, the image does not have the alternative text, so we will have to proceed to edit it through the medium with which we have created our website, either from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/en\/digital-marketing-dictionary\/cms-content-manager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">content management system<\/a> such as Magento or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanlevel.com\/en\/digital-marketing-dictionary\/wordpress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WordPress<\/a>, or in the code, in the tags &lt;img&gt;&lt;\/img&gt;.<\/p>\n<h2>Guidelines to follow for writing a good alt attribute<\/h2>\n\n<p>First of all, the first key point is to choose a suitable image in relation to the content of a web page.<\/p>\n<p>And as we have already pointed out above, <strong>an alternative text must be descriptive and relevant to the content of the image<\/strong>. Obviously, the alternative text does not always <em>have to be<\/em> optimized, but if we have the possibility of using the keyword in its wording, it is more than beneficial for SEO.
